If you forgot it, tough.

The above quote is from my childhood, just after we would get in the car for a long trip, packed to the gills with nearly everything that one could think of. I find it apropos for the starting fall semester, especially with the students flying in and getting settled in the dorms. Besides the selling of books at the bookstore, they also sell clothing (VCSU branded, of course) for the new or returning student. Some buy the swag for a nostalgia trip later in life, or bragging rights when in public. Others buy the gear for a purpose closer to home. Perhaps they forgot some of their clothing in the hype of moving and getting ready, perhaps because they’ve worn all the clothes they brought and don’t feel like going to the Laundromat, who really knows?

But besides books and clothing, the bookstore also carries water bottles, calculators, baseball caps, cookbooks, USB flash drives, pencils, just about anything that a prospective new or returning student could need for their academic careers.

The employees in the bookstore are also very friendly, greeting you when you enter, asking if you need any help finding anything or need any help with answers for your questions. The two cashiers and the bookstore librarian are there when you need them, but not to the point of pushiness or badgering. It’s an excellent resource for students and visitors alike. With the Valley City State University bookstore and it’s employees, the days of “if you forgot it, tough” are becoming a distant memory.

Once more into the Breach, dear friends.

Hello and welcome to my blog. This blog will be used for the assignments this semester in COMM 200, at Valley City State University, Fall 2013. The aim for this blog, in addition to being the place where I will submit my assignments for class, will really be my sounding board on topics that strike my fancy. Barring assigned topics, there will be very little rhyme or reason to expounded topics, save that I felt like writing about that particular thing that week.

My blog is named “Big Fish, Small Pond” as that’s sometimes what I feel here, being raised in a city of 180,000 for a majority of my life. Beyond that, I’ll leave you to draw any other meanings.

I figure that in order to understand what I’m doing, you should probably know a bit about me. Now, as this is the internet, I don’t intend to give Social Security numbers and passports, you understand. My name is Robert, I’m 27 years old, and I’m a junior at Valley City State University. My major is English Education, recently switched from the Medical Laboratory Technician program, as I found myself going cross-eyed with all the science. I live with my family: mother and father, brother, and dog. I enjoy reading fiction, mainly fantasy and science fiction, though I find myself with less time to enjoy reading lately with all the schooling and work. I don’t really like people all that much, unfortunately, especially in large groups. It’s a strange thing to have when you work retail and intend to be a teacher. I think you’ll end up learning more about me as the semester goes on, so I’ll leave it there for now.
